University of Central Arkansas Scholarship
 

Each year the Porter Fund has awarded a Porter Scholarship to a student enrolled in the University of Central Arkansas MFA Writing Program. 2024 Porter Fund Scholarship recipient, Caroline Cherry Averitt, received $5,000. 

 

Caroline Cherry Averitt, from Jonesboro, AR, graduated from Arkansas State University with a B.S. in multimedia journalism and a minor in writing studies, creative track in 2024. She has always had a passion for writing and as an Arkansas native, is excited to cultivate those passions at the Arkansas Writers MFA Workshop through this scholarship.

The Porter Fund

The Porter Fund was founded in 1984 by novelist Jack Butler and novelist and lawyer Phil McMath to honor Dr. Ben Kimpel. Kimpel was noted professor of English at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. The Porter Fund prize is named in honor of Kimpel’s mother, Gladys Crane Kimpel Porter. The annual prize of $5,000 is given to an Arkansas writer of merit and has been awarded to over 35 poets, novelists, non-fiction writers and playwrights.
